A website is a digital experience, and in many case… the first impression of a brand. And just like a physical store, you want to make sure that when people come, they’re incentivized to spend some time there looking around and ultimately being funneled into a desired action. They should come away from your page with a better idea of who you are, what your business is about, and connect with why it should matter to them.

A Website? In 2025?
With all the new tech, focus on social media platforms, AI, web 3.0… it can be a little confusing as to whether you actually need an official website or not. The short of it is, probably. Your website is a hub for everything related to your brand/business. It’s a one-stop shop for your current and potential customers/fans alike. And everything else, should lead people back to your website where you have control and proper calls to action. Beyond the functionality aspect, beyond the ability to actually house information on a website… it simply looks better for you to be more than a random social media account with some pictures and clips.
This is also where web design itself comes in. You want your site to represent your business correctly with not only the right branding and colors, but to be easily navigated, accessible, and eye-pleasing. This is user experience (UX), and is crucial for keeping your target audience engaged and ensuring return visits. Set the expectation for high quality, attention to detail, and excellence.
WHO NEEDS A WEBSITE ANYWAY?
Many would consider a website to be unnecessary in this day and age, and believe that a social media presence is enough. Let’s be honest… for some, that may actually be true. If you can get by with just pictures and maybe a couple short videos to sell your product (like a small clothing brand or you sell collectibles or art) then alright. But if you have an actual business/brand, social media is supposed to be a tool to drive traffic to your hub… not to be the hub of your entire brand.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Ownership is the key to success. And if you choose to house the entirety of your business/brand on a platform you don’t own, you are at risk. Let’s use real-world examples.
There are countless small businesses who chose to forgo having a website, and built their entire company on Facebook/Meta or Instagram. They were even successful there, for a time. That is until Meta’s AI incorrectly flagged their account for suspension and inevitably a full ban within 90 days. Entire 6 and 7 figure businesses were wiped out in an instant without warning. Customer support there was a joke, requiring you to purchase a special tier of blue check mark to even be able to speak to a real person at all (via chat of course. No phone support.) You’d think I’m making this up, but an entire Subreddit exists with 30k+ members all falling victim to this.
But don’t take my word for it… the most recent post at the time of this writing from just 14 hours ago says this:
The bottom of his post goes on to say, “This has essentially killed my business overnight and I have no idea what I allegedly did wrong. Any help or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated.” Nightmare scenario for this business owner, and countless others.
And actually… do take my word for it. Because I too, fell victim to a random suspension and ban. The only difference was my website is unaffected. The dependence on AI is only going to make this sort of issue more common, and much worse.
Looming threat of losing everything you’ve built and all connection to your customer base aside, you also are making the assumption that all of your incoming traffic has and actively participates on that platform. Let’s take an objective look at what this means for you directly.
REAL WORLD USE CASE
The first issue you’re going to run into without a website, is the inability to rank for search keywords. So when a potential customer looks up “Best Shawarma in (insert city or postal code here)”, forget not being on the first or second page of results…you’ll NEVER appear. People also rarely search for goods and services via social media. If you were looking for a new landscaper, odds are you didn’t open up Instagram and try to search for “Landscaping in Springfield.” And if you did, you didn’t get good results because social media platforms continuously change their algorithms, and Instagram has absolutely ruined their search feature along with making hashtags completely irrelevant.
Not having a website means you’re hoping your target market ignores the competition, finds you, then looks at some pictures and short clips, then makes a purchase decision. For some businesses like clothing or small products… that might work. But for everyone else, there’s no real opportunity for discovery. This is where a proper website that ranks for keywords and targeted audiences would shine. Link back to your social media accounts from the website. Let people follow your social platforms because they like the vibes and content, but that content should funnel them back to your website or store to take a desired action.
Both social media and a website are necessary because they feed each other. One will establish legitimacy and put you in front of the right audience, the other will add social presence and hopefully allow someone to stumble across you. But depending only on social media means you’re ok with ignoring the entire market segment of people not using that platform actively and/or not using social media to search for businesses. That’s in the triple digit millions here in the US alone.
And sure, you might be doing well with just a social account, and that’s GREAT! But just imagine what would happen with the added benefit of showing up in searches and having a bigger advertisement pool than the randomized discovery page.
